Message from the ISO/TC 106 Chairman

Dear Colleagues/Friends,
With great pleasure, I welcome you to the 53rd annual meeting of ISO/TC 106 in Hong Kong. I am very grateful to the Innovation and Technology Commission, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for extending a warm welcome to ISO/TC 106 delegates and hosting the meeting. Many people at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Dentistry worked hard to make this meeting happen and I am also grateful for their efforts, especially the Dean (Prof. T. Flemmig), the responsible Ass. Dean (Prof CH. Chu), the section head biomaterials (Prof. J. Matinlinna) and Dr. James Tsoi, who invested a lot of time and efforts into this project I also want to thank Ms. Sylvia Lefebvre for her tremendous help in organizing this meeting.

We have gathered in Hong Kong to continue our work of improving dental standards. Standards play an essential role in modern dentistry and the comparatively large size of ISO/TC 106 reflects the activity and resources that the dental community has invested in this field. Standards are developed to facilitate the international exchange of goods on open markets. However, setting standards also ensures the quality of products. In that sense, the work we do today ensures quality for standards and standards for quality. ISO standards (and others) are often used to fulfil legal requirements before a material or a device can be brought to market. There is also an underlying responsibility to include the important work of quality assurance and I am confident we will meet these broader expectations.

Hong Kong is certainly one of the fascinating cities in the world. The list of highlights in this city (ancient temples, beautiful harbors, night markets, astounding architecture, etc.) would cover pages. To me, the fascinating part of Hong Kong is its diversity of people and cultures. I hope you take the time to enjoy the city and wish you all a very enjoyable and productive meeting.
